A loss on the road for Sounders U-23

The Sounders U-23 traveled to Victoria, BC to face the Victoria Highlanders which resulted in a 2-1 loss on the road. A lone goal by Santiago Patino in the first half seemed to give the Sounders hope, but it was the Highlanders who were able to score two second half goals to win the 3 points.

In the 38th minute, Patino battled his way through into the box while being pressured by two defenders and gets brought down in the penalty area as the referee signals for a penalty kick. The initial kick by Patino gets blocked by Highlanders keeper Nolan Wirth but Patino makes no mistake on the rebound as he finishes it into the back of the net. Sounders led at the half 1-0.

On a corner kick in the 61st minute, the cross gets a wonderful flick from near to far post as the Highlanders player Marcus Campanile comes in late to crush it home for the Highlanders. The game was equalized 1-1.

The Highlanders came in with a dangerous counter in the 84th minute where Sounders keeper and defender, Ben Willis and Tyler John, were able to come up with a good save and great block, but it was the third shot by Mitchell Popadynetz that punishes the Sounders as he strikes it into the back of the net.

Not much was left in the tank as Sounders came up short and lost 2-1 away at Victoria.
