The Sounders U23 team hosted the Portland Timbers U23 in a game at Sunset Stadium in Sumner on Tuesday, July 3rd at 7:30pm. After taking three points at Portland last week, the Sounders U23 team started where they left off dominating the Cascadia rival from start to finish. The game ended 4-0 for Sounders U23 having scored 6 unanswered goals in two games to take the series on the year.
The first half saw a possession game for the Sounders U23 that kept control of the match but did not yield any goals. After the intermission, the boys in green came out firing and Santiago Patino smashed in a Portland miscue to take the lead in the 61st minute. Trevor Jenson then got in the act with a goal in the 69th. As the Sounders U23 really started to roll, Philip Lund dropped an absolute bomb in the upper corner from 25 yards out to punctuate a well developed build up. Eddie Na finished the scoring in the 85th with a long range shot that hit the net. Final score was 4-0 for the Sounders U23 and marked the second time in two weeks that the Sounders U23 blanked the Portland Timbers U23 team.
With a record of 4-4-3, the Sounders U23 take over the 2nd place position in the PDL Northwest Division with 3 games to go. The second seed playoff position is still up for grabs as well as a US Open Cup birth for 2019.
The Sounders U23 return to action Friday, July 6th at Sunset Stadium at 7:30pm. The game represents the annual MRFC youth club night and the Sounders U23 play the Victoria Highlanders looking to maintain their position in the table.
